Zane Handy saved 14 of 16 shots in his final game for St. Margaret’therefore, and also the Tartans’ defense, headed by Langston Sholl and long-stick midfielder Duke Ballard, made it incredibly hard for Loyola to get quality shots.
St. Margaret’s (16-3) directed 11-6 in halftime and scored six consecutive goals in the opening minutes of the first half. Campbell Case scored three of those six goals and had six points.
In 2018, St. Margaret’s dropped to Loyola in the Section championship 10-9 in overtime, a loss that’s haunted the Tartans to get annually.
The loss ended a three-year Southern Section championship series for Loyola (16-8). The Cubs beat Palos Verdes 12-6 for its Los Angeles championship Wednesday.
“We have 16 seniors and these are 15 of my best friends and we really came together and accomplished all our goals this season,” Groeninger explained. “This is a great way to go out”
The Tartans scored six consecutive goals in the first half and played with with defense.
Sophomore Nate Sanchez had six points with four goals and Stephen Deck and seniors Koa Todd scored one goal and two, respectively, in their final high school game.
“It has come to the point where we’re only expecting the ball each time,” Groeninger said. “He has been do dominant on faceoffs and it has been great to see.”

Stuart Pollard won 16 faceoffs and won 89% of his faceoffs.
St. Margaret’s won its final 12 games of the season after losing two consecutive games at the hands of Santa Margarita and Mater Dei in March. The Tartans averaged 15.6 goals each game in the playoffs.
The Tartans boys group routed Loyola 13-4 and scored the first 12 goals of the game. The triumph was the first daddy championship for St. Margaret’s since 2015.
“Last year was a certain low point then reduction. We were all really devastated,” St. Margaret’s attackman Kevin Groeninger said. “It gave us motivation throughout the entire year.
“Our defense played extremely well. Zane was absolutely dominant,” Groeninger explained. “It played a big role now. I certainly was not expecting to maintain 12 goals and have a running clock in the next quarter.”
The St. Margaret’s girls cruised into a 20-9 win over Palos Verdes to acquire its second consecutive Southern Section championship.
The Tartans scored four goals at a 61-minute interval from the first half to make the score 6-1 and blow the game open.

Groeninger had three assists in the win to complete his high school career with 411 points, that’s that the 83rd most in the nation’s history and scored four times.
St. Margaret’s revealed it is the most dominant lacrosse program in the Southern Department by winning the boys and girls Southern Section championships Saturday in Mira Costa High at Manhattan Beach.
Maddie Barkate scored four occasions and Niki and Jordan Miles each had five points. Niki had two assists and scored three goals and Jordan scored twice with three assists. Freshman Grace Karstetter had three goals and an assist .
